121. Drying area of Saf Cacao

SAN PEDRO, COTE D’IVOIRE, 2006. The vast courtyard of Saf Cacao, a Lebanese Shiite cocoa buying business that has been an important member of the business community in this town since the 1930s. One often sees huge sheets of plastic covering the tarmac with cocoa beans drying in the tropical sun. It’s a lot cheaper to dry with the sun rather than using the energy guzzling ovens.
