GONATE, COTE D’IVOIRE, 2004. A small hamlet near Gonate—near a large rubber plantation. Note that in this community, the houses are arranged in an oval. The young man is listening to a radio, which is a rare sight. During the rainy season, people put black plastic sheeting on the roof and weight it down. Grass roofs tend to leak, but they also breathe nicely and don’t make noise during a rainstorm.
