ELMINA, GHANA, 2014. The history of the Ghanaian slave trade is mostly about the Ashanti, a kingdom that started about 50 miles from the ocean, making forays into Fante lands, kidnapping people, and selling them for guns to the Dutch and British who occupied the forts. Many non-Ashanti remember this sordid period, which lasted well into the 19th century.
